There are eight “true” tuna species and almost 50 species that are related or confused with tuna. These true species all belong to the genus Thunnus. The species include: Atlantic bluefin tuna, Pacific bluefin tuna, southern bluefin tuna, albacore tuna, yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna, shipjack tuna, and little tunny. It was not until recently that scientist recognized that the Atlantic and Pacific bluefin tuna are different species instead of subspecies of one another.
