ESPN keeps fan attendance totals, divided both by team and whether it is a home or away game. Rounding off to the nearest thousand, then totalling the number of fans for either home or away (if you include both, you would be double-counting, as one team’s home game is by definition another’s away game, yet the same fans are in attendance for both), the number comes in at approximately 16,500,000. This number is in keeping with the 32 teams’ total fan attendance, for either home or away games, of around 500,000. So approximately 16,500,000 per year, at least according to my calculation:)
