How many factory farms do we have in America?

The government uses several more precise terms for factory farms. First, an AFO is an animal feeding operation. A CAFO is a concentrated animal feeding operation. In an AFO, animals are confined for at least 45 days in 12 months. There are 450,000 of these in the United States. CAFOs are a subset of the AFOs in which there are large numbers of animals confined and pollutants are discharged in U.S. waters. There are 18,800 CAFOs as of 2006.
