According to the website below, 409 of the US’s currently existing rotary rigs are drilling for oil.
The count above is rather low. In most recent months, the rotary rig count of operating rigs in the US has been over 1000 – 1788 in Dec 2008, 1179 in Dec 2009.
The total number of rigs available in the US is about 3,150. During 2010 the rig utilization rate was about 40%. If the original question meant how many oil wells does the US have, that would be about 520,000 producing oil wells, and another 450,000 or so natural gas wells.
