According to the documentary The Cove about the dolphin slaughtering in Taiji, Japan more than 2,400 dolphins and porpoises are killed or captured in Taiji each year. However, more than 20,000 are killed in Japan annually. The effect of dolphin trainers and programs is intense because a live, captive dolphin is worth $146,000 while a dead dolphin, on the other hand, is worth about $500. More dolphins end up being killed than captured because there is not use for 20,000 new captive dolphins each year. So many, in fact, that many of these slaughtered dolphins have no market and are being falsely labeled and sold as whale meat instead.
