The Russians sent at least 13 dogs up into space in the 1950s and 60s. The dogs were used to test the technology and equipment of the space program before humans were sent up. Of the 13 known, 5 died in flight, including the first dog sent up, Laika, a stray mongrel picked up off the streets of Moscow.
