There are approximately 475 species of sea bass. Some sources say there are fifteen species of freshwater bass but this number is debatable as many of the fish used for food and sport are called bass. However, the majority of fishes considered to be bass belong to three families of the order Perciformes: Serranidae, Moronidae, and Centrarchidae. Other fishes known as bass are channel bass, rock bass, and calico bass.
