There are four species: Brazilian tapir, the Malayan tapir, Baird’s tapir and the mountain tapir. Of the four, three are on the IUCN’s endangered list. The Brazillian tapir is listed as vulnerable on that list. All are considered endangered by U.S. Fish & Wildlife.
There are four species of tapir. These are the Asian tapir, Mountain tapir, Lowland or Brazilian tapir and Baird’s tapir. They are closely related. All live in the Americas with the exception of the Asian tapir, which is from Southeast Asia. The Mountain tapir is the smallest, weighing in around 325 pounds, while the Asian tapir can weigh up to 800 pounds.
