In a grocery store, you may find about 2,500 products made from corn (1st link below), but food is not the only good. in the U.S., 332 million metric tons of corn are grown each year. Biodegradable plastics are now becoming popular corn items as well as ethanol (biofuels). But the reason why we have so much corn is because of corn subsidies. I highly recommend the book Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan (2nd link below). He explains corn’s history and how government subsidies enabled corn to be sold too cheaply around the world, thus bankrupting developing countries’ farmers.
