There are 7 numbers you can find on plastics with the recycling symbol, however, not all of them are actually recycled. But there is hope! In San Francisco, for instance, they are now accepting all numbers 1 – 7 in their recycling program. Below is a great link that tells you what number is on what product, the frequency of it being recycled, and what the recycled product is made into. A friend of mine who worked in solid waste told me that even if your community doesn’t recycle all the numbers, put all plastics in the bin anyway. This will pressure them to consider it.
