It is hard to state an exact number of how many dams were built using public works projects, but there seems to be many. There is an estimate of over 75,000 dams in the United States, and most seem to be public works projects.
One of the most famous examples of a dam built as a public works project is the Hoover Dam.
You may want to research specific dams you are interested in to see if it is a public works project since there are way too many to count!
Here is a great source on all the dams of the United States: http://www.nationalatlas.gov/mld/dams00x.html
