There are 1,333 unsafe dams in the USA that are threatening communities across the country. There are 87,000 dams under US state regulations. Over 10,000 are considered to be a high hazard and potentially damaging to human life if they fail. 1,333 of these dams are considered structurally unsafe and in need of immediate repair to prevent a catastrophe. Dam inspectors are supposed to be in charge of 50 dams, but they are currently in charge of 400 each.
What is even more worrying is the fact that the number of actual dams in the US is currently unknown, as there has never been an official count, which means it’s possible there are even more unsafe dams in the country that is currently known.
