There are about 79,000 dams in the National Inventory of Dams (NID). The NID does not, however, count every single dam in the US. It only records dams that are “more than 25 feet high, hold more than 50 acre-feet of water, or are considered a significant hazard if they fail”. There are most likely thousands of other small dams made by people, perhaps even on their own personal property, that don’t have a major impact on water flow or the environment.
