The number of cattle in the US is estimated at between 96 and 97 million.
On July 1, 2009, there were 101.8 million cows in the United States. The number of cows fell by 1 percent between 2008 and 2009. Cow numbers have fallen. As of July 1, 2003, there were 103.9 million cattle (including calves) according to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service.
According to USDA’s January 30, 2009 Cattle Report, all cattle and calves in the U.S., as of January 1, 2009, totaled 94.5 million head. And the estimate of just the dairy cow numbers are 9.2 million in 2009.
