How many countries are classified as being developed versus undeveloped? Is there a middle-ground classification too?

The terms developed and developing, in relation to the status of a country, are complicated and no clear definition has been agreed upon, making it very hard to provide concrete numbers. Traditionally, per capita income and gdp were the determining factors, but recently a new system based on those figures combined with information on life expectancy and education has emerged, called the Human Development Index. According to the 2009 HDI, there are 38 countries with very high human development, 45 countries with high development, 75 with medium development and 24 with low development.
