I have been searching for an answer to this question for several weeks now, to the point where it’s become a personal crusade, but I can’t find any statistics that even guess at it, at least not any nationwide numbers. The closest I could get to an answer was a figure for Japan, which indicated that 1,814,000 air conditioning units were recycled in Japan in one year (2004-05). In Japan, recycling of air conditioners is mandated by law, as it is in many US states. Multiply that figure by 2.37 (our population is about 2.37 times the size of Japan’s) and you get a figure of 4,299,180, which is a guess but at least one that’s a reasonable approximation based on some verifiable statistic.
