Since most modern container ships can carry up to 15,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), and since most containers today are 40 feet long, the average container ship can carry 7,500 containers.
Respectfully disagree. The largest container vessel in construction at present does not exceed 12,000TEU. In service about – 10,000TEU. TEU arbitrary measure anyway. Ratio of 20ft to 40ft is about 50/50.
Well, the largest ship currently is the Emma Maersk, which is designed to hold 13,500 but can hold 15,000 TEUs. STX of South Korea are building a 22,000 TEU ship. See: http://www.shippingtimes.co.uk/item_10082.html and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_container_ships
TEU happens to be the standard used to measure capacity. One TEU is equivalent to a standard 20-foot container measuring 20 × 8.0 × 8.5 feet.
