New York City is working towards banning the pumping of water into the Lloyd Aquifer for storage, due to environmental concerns of contamination. There have also been growing concerns about the Florida cities of Clearwater, Oldsmar and the area of Tarpon Springs’ plans to pump water into an aquifer. It is becoming a less popular solution.
The Irvine Ranch Water District in Orange County CA currently uses indirect reuse to replenish its aquifer. It treats waste water to a potable state then injects it back into the groundwater table to both act as a buffer against sea water intrusion as well as to help increase existing water supplies.
