The most recent numbers the US Department of Agriculture has put out are from 2007. In that year, they estimate that Americans smoked 360 billion cigarettes. Surprisingly, this is down 12 billion from the year before. The USDA believes the decrease in consumption is due to cumulative effects of higher prices, state taxes, social stigma, and increased awareness on the effects of smoking.
