    “2007 – 360,000,000,000 (Estimate by USDA)”

Every cigarette consumed has a butt which is thrown out. The USDA estimated in 2007 that 360 billion cigarettes were smoked in the U.S., and this number seems to be going down yearly since 1993 (probably because of increased prices of ciggs and more information about their harmful effects) so by now the numbers is probably somewhere around 320 billion cigarettes smoked (and therefore butts discarded) per year in the U.S.
