The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that 1.9 billion christmas cards are mailed each year (based on a 2005 estimate). A reporter for the Postal Service says 3.4 billion are expected for 2008, but includes christmas letters in that total. Yet another source says christmas cards, letters, and packages are supposed to be 19 billion for 2008: http://www.infoplease.com/spot/holidaycensus1.html. The methodology seems to take a count of total mail between thanksgiving and christmas, so actually separating out which mail is for christmas only is not being counted.
