How many cell phones get thrown away each year?

As of 2009, over 5 million phones are thrown away annually, a result of what seems to be the ‘need’ to always have the latest phone on the market.

However I feel this could be reduced if more people were aware of recycling organizations that not only offer cash for used phones, but also minimize the amount of toxic metals that get released in to the environment otherwise. These recycling centers work with the metals that can be put back into circulation for use, decreasing the need for as much metal mining.
