The record industry sales were at a peak for albums in 2000 but sales have declined 45% since then, largely because of the rapid growth of digital music. A little over a billion songs were downloaded in 2008, while 361 million CD’s were sold. CD sales of 2008 were down 20% from 2007.
To add to this answer the United States buy’s the most digital music, followed by Asia. According to this website digital music will account for the majority of major label revenue in the U.S. market as time goes on.
