A similar question was asked on GreenAnswers previously and you can look at the answers here: http://greenanswers.com/q/53278/transportation/infrastructure/how-many-people-drive-every-day-america. They deduced that about 210 million people drive in America every day. I imagine a slightly lower but similar number for cars on the road, considering not everyone that drives owns a car.
I read in a news report from 2005 that an average of 220 Americans spend an hour and a half behind the wheel a day. A poll revealed that 90 percent of Americans said they usually drive to where they need to go. Commuters average at 100 minutes in the car, while people with kids average 104. Those without kids reported they drive 77 minutes, on average, per day.
