India is becoming a major manufacturer of automobiles, since the Economic Liberalisation of the 1990’s. In 2009, India was ranked as the 4th largest car producing country in Asia. In 2009 the industry’s monthly sales amounted to more than 100,000 exported vehicles. Despite the high rate of vehicle manufacturing and exporting, India has comparatively few cars on the road. Approximately 102,873,744 motorcycles are owned (corresponding to roughly 10 percent of households), and it was estimated in 2007 that 7,201,163 cars were owned (0.7 percent of households).
India has about 12 cars per 1000 people. The population of India is about 1,139,964,000, making about 13,679,568 cars.
