Approximately ten million cars are scrapped in the United States every year.
The number of vehicles scrapped during the fourth quarter of 2010 spiked to the highest level seen since the brief Cash for Clunkers program – which was specifically intended to get old products off the road. In the fourth quarter of 2010 the scrappage rate rose 28.3% over the third quarter of 2010 which is a total of about 5.7 million vehicles. Most of these vehicles were from the years 1983 to 1992.
