It’s difficult to give the exact number, because lumber manufacturing is carried out by all different levels of organizations and businesses, including the US Forest Service, corporations, and private individuals. However, you can get an idea of the magnitude from these statistics: in 1990, 9.7 billion board feet were sold in the Northwest. Consider the size of the Northwest, and then consider how much more logging is going on outside of the Northwest in the United States (although most occurs there!) In 1990, the Target Sale amount of lumber in the US was 11.3 billion board feet of lumber. 1.1 billion board feet were exported to China in 1991…imagine how much is marketed in the continental U.S.
