How many blue fin tuna does Japan eat in a year?

Japan consumes a total of 53,000 tons of bluefin tuna a year. 43,000 tons of this are Atlantic and Pacific bluefin tuna varieties while 10,000 tons are southern bluefin tuna.

The domestic fishing fleet is responsible for catching a majority of the Pacific bluefin but most of the Atlantic bluefin is imported. In 2008, Japan imported about 18,700 tons of the 21,400 Atlantic bluefin consumed. At least 80-85% of Atlantic bluefin in the Mediterranean is exported to Japan. Japan accounts for 70-80% of all bluefin tuna traded internationally.
