Regarding the recent oil spill, when the ship Rena crashed into the Astrolabe Reef off the coast of New Zealand, about 2,000 oil-covered seabirds were found onshore. Experts predict that another 90% of the birds affected by the spill were killed at sea, unable to move and drowned. Wildlife rescue professionals nursed about 400 New Zealand Dotterels and Little Blue Penguins back to health and released them into the wild by the end of 2011.
