The San Diego Zoo has one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of birds in the world and the largest number of individual birds in the United States. They currently have over 3,500 birds and 400 different types of species.
They are specifically proud of their rare species including the great blue turaco (West Africa), the Congo peafowl, and the Andean condor. They also have the only pair of harpy eagles that are currently breeding in North America (and Europe). They also are currently hosting the endangered kagu, who is native to New Caledonia. The Zoo is the only facilitiy in the US to have the kagu.
