I did not find an exact number, but I did find a list compiled by the Ornithological Society of New Zealand (OSNZ) of all native species as of 2003, including their threat classification.

Here are the best numbers I could find for you:

    • About 200 bird species regularly occur in New Zealand. Of this number, about 90 species are endemic (native to) New Zealand.
    • 73 species of New Zealand’s native bird species are on the World Conservation Union’s ‘red list’ of threatened species.
    • There are over 80 species of seabirds in New Zealand – this is why it is known as the seabird capital of the world.

This site has a load of information on the different bird species of New Zealand: http://www.doc.govt.nz/conservation/native-animals/birds/birds-a-z/
