14.9 million bicycles were sold in 2010 in the United States, more than three times the number of cars sold.
This is a somewhat impossible question because of the number of bikes sold through craigslist or through other such outlets.
More bikes were actually sold than cars and trucks in the first quarter of 2009. 2.6 million bicycles were sold compared to less than 2.5 million cars and trucks (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dennis-markatos/us-bike-sales-higher-than_b_207899.html)
Bicycle sells have risen since the 1990s. The total US Bicycle Market rose from 15.2 million in 1997 to 16.6 million in 2001 to 19.6 million in 2005. The bicycle market was affected by the recessions seen since 2000 though.
Also, sales averaged about 16 million bikes per year in the 1990s.
