There are over 20,000 known species of bee so it’s hard to say in general; most of the current worry is about a specific species, the European honeybee. Even as beekeepers voice growing fears over worries about honey bee depopulation, since they live in such dense colonies and only function in large numbers, it seems difficult to get an exact number. The closest thing I can find to a meaningful figure is that beekeepers report losing 1/3 of their colonies, which is significant…but still doesn’t tell us the number of bees in North America.
