This is actually the most common cause of death of Black Bears in Yosemite. Over 15 were killed in 2006 and the number usually hovers around that figure. The park asks to please drive the speed limit and keep your eyes open for wildlife on the roads!
In 2012, 9 bears have been hit by cars in Yosemite National Park so far. Two of them died. In 2010, 28 bears were hit by cars, and 7 died. In order to decrease these numbers, the park has created speed limit signs that remind people that “speeding kills bears.” Since this initiative, more hits have been recorded. This could simply be, however, an increase in reported hits and not actual hits.
