    California is ranked as having some of the worst beach water quality in the nation, coming in 22nd of 30 coastlines. The number of beach closures fluctuates every year based on a variety of conditions. For example, in 2002 there were 12,184 beach closures and 4,000 this year due to high bacteria levels. Pollution of beach water is caused by sewage, storm water, and unknown sources. Los Angeles was rated as having the worst beach water quality in California.
