Most ethanol in the US was historically imported, although the United States has been producing more ethanol in recent years. Last year, producers made 761,000 barrels of ethanol a day, so that would be 277,765,000 barrels during the year. Or you could say around 280 million barrels. We import about half that much (around 144 million) barrels per year.
And to give perspective, 761,000 barrels of ethanol per day is not quite 4% of US petroleum consumption (19,600,000 barrels per day).
