    225 species are candidates waiting to be added to the endangered species list. The average wait time for a species to be put on the list is 17 years. Of the present candidates, 178 have been waiting 10 years, 86 for 20 years and 64 have been waiting since 1975. The Obama administration has stated intentions towards changing the list process to create a 12-month response.
