How many birds are killed in building collisions each year?

Many more than you might think:  over 1 billion per year, and over 200 per day in urban areas.  Ornithologists at Muhlhenberg university, who recently conducted a study on the problem, claim that building strikes are second only to habitat depletion in causing bird deaths.  The Muhlenberg team hopes to design partly reflective windows, which, hopefully, birds will be able to see and avoid.
