We only know about a small percentage of the species on the planet. About 1.4 million species have been discovered out of an estimated 10-100 million species total. In addition, endangered species, being less abundant, would be even more difficult to discover. Many species of smaller organisms appear identical to existing species, but in fact will not interbreed, and thus are separate. The Us Fish and Wildlife service lists the total number of endangered plant and animal species at 1898. Using the ratio of discovered to undiscovered species above, that means the actual total number of endangered species could range between approximately 19,000 and 190,000, but is likely much higher due to the relative difficulty of finding endangered species.
