The Humane Society estimates that 6 to 8 million dogs and cats enter animal shelters every year in the United States. Due largely to overpopulation of dogs and cats in the U.S., approximately 3 to 4 million of them are ultimately euthanized.

Although this number is tragically large, the rates have decreased markedly since the 1970’s, when about 25 percent of dogs and cats in the U.S. were euthanized every year.
