The magazine the Physican’s Committee for Responsible Medicine publishes seasonally states that 20,000 chickens can be packed into a single building on a factory farm. It also states that over nine billion chickens are killed every year for meat in this country. Virtually all birds raised for food in the US are factory farmed. An average of ten billion land animals are raised and killed for meat on a yearly basis in the US. Ninety-five percent of these are birds, averaging i million chickens killed for the broiler an hour. The total number of cattle (cows and calves) in the US in July 2009 was 101.1 million – most of which will either be used for meat or for dairy products.
