Research by the USDA shows that 45 million people go hungry in the US every day. Since the onslaught of the recession, the number of hungry American familes has drastically increased. In 2008, 1 in 8 Americans went without food. In 2009, this number increased to 1 in 6.
In addition to that, hunger in households all across the country have almost doubled in the past few years – forty-three percent to be exact. Since the start of the new millennium, it is reported by the US Department of Agriculture that another seven million Americans have been added to their fellow impoverished. Almost 40 million Americans suffer from both hunger and food insecurity, not knowing where their next meal is going to come from. A large majority of these Americans are residing in states in the South and Mid-West.
