How many Americans are vegetarians?

I think it’s difficult to calculate exactly how many Americans are vegetarians, especially when many people choose to change their dietary preferences, sometimes day-to-day.  It’s also noteworthy that people have changing definitions for what a vegetarian is, or rather what one eats.  I called myself a vegetarian from age 11 to 21 but somewhere along the line I began to eat fish.  When? I’m not sure, exactly.  This short article reflects that people sometimes choose to be strictly vegetarian, but at the same time validates the people who are inclined to eat vegetarian diets but are not as strict:

The article notes that in 2008 one study shows that 3.2% of Americans were vegetarian.
