How many acres of rainforest get destroyed in a day?

The National Institute for Space Research estimates that 14,000 sq. km of the Amazon rainforest was destroyed in 2008. That is an average of 38.4 sq km per day, or almost 9500 acres.

There are also rainforests in countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia. Rates of destruction of rainforests in other parts of the world are probably comparable to that of the Amazon rainforest as the demand for biofuel and other crops increases.
