How many acres does the National Wilderness Preservation System have?

    When first created in 1964, 9.1 million acres were preserved.  Today it covers 109.5 million acres in 44 states and Puerto Rico.  Over half the land was added in the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act.  756 different areas are protected by this system.
