What is known as Old Growth Forest in the US, America’s oldest forests now cover only 28 percent of what it once did. Most of these forest islands are isolated and fragmented snapshots of what America’s forests would have looked like if they had had the 500 to 1500 years they needed to reach their full potential. The most intensely managed old-growth forests in the US are the Redwoods and Sequoias of the Pacific North-West, of which only 45 percent of the original area remains with far less areas of old-growth forests.
