Animal shelters do see a lot of pets during specific trends, when home breeders attempt to make money by breeding a popular dog, and since its a trend, the people who take the animal don’t want the responsibility later (because of this, around easter many pet shops will not sell rabbits or chicks due to the high number of these animals discarded after the cute holiday factor wears off).
25% of dogs abandoned are purebred.
Many people want breeding to be regulated, but the decision on how that regulation would work is controversial and uncertain.
