According to an article on Priuschat.com, Toyota is recalling a total of 270,000 of the 2010 hybrids in both the United States and Japan – the countries where the Prius is distributed the widest. Although Toyota has not made an official statement, it plans on installing brake software into the malfunctioning units to correct the problem.
The Los Angeles Times reports that as of February 9, 2010 there will be 133,000 Priuses recalled by Toyota. Each owner will receive a letter to inform them of the problem and to invite them to bring their cars to Toyota dealerships in order to fix the software issue. Even before the Prius recall, Toyota had estimated their losses on the previous recalls at $2 billion.
