How long will it take us to get our national MPG of 40?

Not exactly sure. But I think this is a safe, realistic estimate: 15 – 20 years. There is a chance if we decide to push a stricter law code and have environmental regulations and more severe penalties for companies not trying to increase their car’s fuel efficiency it could happen sooner… but I think honestly it will take at least 10 years for us to get there. (It’s not nearly far enough though, we should strive to reach an average of 100 mpg by the year 2030!)  As you can see though (if you check out the link) we really aren’t making great strides yet (it’s going to take a major push from the Gov’t in the form of passing a more protective environmental bill!)
