Scientists are still trying to figure out just how bad the lasting effects of the Fukishima disaster will be. Right now, the disaster stands as the 2nd worst nuclear incident in history, somewhere between Chernobyl and 3 Mile Island. The greatest risk to human health at this point, is eating food or drinking anything that is contaminated with radiative material; the Japanese Government has worked tirelessly to insure no contaminated products hit the markets.
The more obvious effects will be those seen in evacuated citizens and plant workers who received high dosages of radiation immediately following the explosion. Those individuals will be monitored for increased health problems, most likely various cancers, however those effects may take decades to develop and be noticed.
